If you are not aware of the extensive networks of the drug cartels in Mexico, you will understand them clearly by the end of this book. In this case, a young man from a poor family opted to work for a cartel to earn good money - and as compared to others, he earned a lot of it, along with the cache that accompanied being a cartel member. It was all good until his drug use and the paranoia of those around him caused him to start making mistakes, then it was all over. He's lucky he got out with his life. Despite his conversion, I have to wonder how he can live with the memories...

Ironic and sad, that I have to rate this as "excellent;" there is nothing uplifting about this book - even the subject's attempt at a sort of redemption through a return to religion can spare the reader the horrors that he committed, witnessed, or was part of. As an American citizen who formerly lived in Southern California and experienced the seemingly non-stop flood of illegals into this country, I can now fully understand the desperation that comes from the knowledge that your country is in the hands of others; that Mexico is a narco state - so saith the Sicario, and I fully agree. I am trying to think of a parallel state or country that mirrors or comes close to this book's narrative, but cannot come up with one that is as close as Mexico's 2,000 mile border with our country. I wish it were fiction, but everyday headlines as well as this man's story runs counter to any fiction. Get it and read it and try to come to terms with the reality of Mexico - through this man's eyes.

I live in New Mexico and have been to Juarez many times. I quit going around 2007 when it became apparent that the danger level was at an alarming level. It was the most dangerous city in the world at one point. This man, El Sicario, was submerged in the depths of the violence brought upon the citizens of Juarez by the drug cartels. It's a heartbreaking story. So many have died and so many still suffer. El Sicario sought salvation and lived to tell his story. Some strides have been made against the cartels by the Mexican government the past couple of years. I don't know if anybody can say the tide has turned yet, but the people of our neighboring country are fighting to take back control of various regions. Juarez included.

A great read! Full of knowledge, information and insight from some one who walked the walk in the Drug Cartel. Thank you to the author for sharing your stories and history. Sad, it's left me wondering if anything at all can been done about the horrors taken place in today Mexico. Blessing to this author and his family that they will be protected in the days and years ahead.

It's just business, that's the tone of the "sicario", the cartel enforcer. Extortion, kidnappings, and murder; that was his daily grind. He would do this kind of work for years until his eventual falling out with his employers. This is his story, not an interview in the traditional sense but more of a narration as the sicario takes you through his life. From his youth to his days in the cartel. He tells his story in hope that it could inspire others in the drug gangs to turn away from the "bosses" as he did. To break out of the vicious circle of violence and horror. Whatever you may think of this man, of what he was, or of his sense of redemption through god, his story is still fascinating and important. He starts with his youth, his upbringing seems pretty typical for many Mexicans but his own drive for financial and material gain push him to work for the narco traffickers. Their easy money sold him on their lifestyle. When his family learned about this he was driven off only to do what many aspiring criminals in Mexico do, he became a cop. The sicario's story is shocking but what really sticks out above the violence and depravity, is the revelation of just how deeply entrenched the cartels are in Mexican politics and law enforcement. As a police officer he learned the kind of skills that would be useful in the work of a criminal enforcer. How to use weapons, how to find people, and even had access to the police's resources. With these levels of corruption it's no wonder why the drug war in Mexico has gone the way it has.Eventually the sicario had a falling out with his bosses, which is almost inevitable in his line of work. He points out that putting down burnt-out disillusioned hitmen wasn't all that uncommon. However, somehow he survived. While some may be sickened by what he had done, and some may even be sickened with his belief in redemption through god as a Born-Again Christian, his story is still very significant and well written in this book. This book may not read well for some, especially those who are put off by horrible violence, but it's pivotal look into the Mexican drug cartel from one of it's own.
